Arthritis

Arthritis can make daily activities painful and challenging, affecting joints in the hands, knees, hips, shoulders, and spine. Physical therapy helps manage arthritis by reducing pain, improving joint function, increasing mobility, and teaching strategies to protect your joints and maintain an active lifestyle.

What is Arthritis

Arthritis is a condition that causes inflammation, stiffness, and pain in the joints. It can result from wear-and-tear (osteoarthritis), autoimmune disease (rheumatoid arthritis), or other forms of joint degeneration. Left untreated, arthritis can lead to decreased mobility and difficulty performing everyday tasks.

Common symptoms include:

  • Joint pain, tenderness, or swelling
  • Stiffness, especially in the morning or after inactivity
  • Reduced range of motion
  • Weakness or instability in affected joints
  • Difficulty performing daily activities such as walking, gripping, or reaching

How Physical Therapy Helps

Physical therapy helps manage arthritis symptoms while improving function and overall quality of life. After a thorough evaluation, your licensed therapist creates a customized plan focused on pain relief, strengthening, and mobility.

Treatment may include:

  • Gentle range-of-motion and stretching exercises
  • Strengthening of muscles supporting affected joints
  • Joint protection and movement strategies
  • Balance and coordination training
  • Pain management techniques, including manual therapy
  • Functional exercises to improve daily activities

When Should You Start Physical Therapy?

You may benefit from physical therapy if you:

  • Experience persistent joint pain or stiffness
  • Notice decreased mobility or function
  • Have difficulty performing daily activities
  • Want to prevent joint degeneration or future pain.

Early intervention can improve joint function, reduce pain, and slow the progression of arthritis.
