Chronic Pain

Living with chronic pain can affect every part of your life—from work and exercise to daily activities and overall well-being. Physical therapy helps manage chronic pain by addressing underlying causes, improving mobility and strength, and teaching strategies to reduce discomfort and regain function.

What is Chronic Pain

Chronic pain is pain that persists for weeks, months, or even years, often lasting longer than the typical healing time. It can result from injury, surgery, arthritis, nerve conditions, or other underlying health issues. Without proper care, chronic pain can become limiting and impact both physical and emotional health.

Common symptoms include:

  • Persistent aches or discomfort in the muscles, joints, or spine
  • Stiffness and reduced range of motion
  • Fatigue or decreased endurance
  • Numbness or tingling in affected areas
  • Pain that affects sleep, work, or daily activities
  • Difficulty performing routine movements

How Physical Therapy Helps

Physical therapy addresses chronic pain through a combination of targeted exercises, movement training, and patient education. After a thorough evaluation, your licensed therapist creates a personalized plan to reduce pain, restore function, and improve quality of life.

Treatment may include:

  • Stretching and range-of-motion exercises
  • Strengthening for muscles supporting painful areas
  • Posture and body mechanics training
  • Manual therapy and pain management techniques
  • Functional exercises for daily activities
  • Education on pain management strategies and injury prevention

When Should You Start Physical Therapy?

You may benefit from physical therapy if you:

  • Experience pain that persists longer than expected after an injury or surgery
  • Notice reduced mobility or strength
  • Have difficulty performing daily activities due to pain
  • Want to improve function and reduce discomfort without relying solely on medications

Early intervention can improve function, decrease pain, and help prevent further complications.
