Sciatica

Sciatica can cause sharp, radiating pain, numbness, or tingling from the lower back down through the leg, making everyday activities difficult and uncomfortable. Physical therapy is a proven way to reduce pain, improve function, and restore your quality of life by addressing the underlying cause of your symptoms.

What Is Sciatica?

Sciatica is a condition that occurs when the sciatic nerve is irritated or compressed, often due to a herniated disc, spinal stenosis, or muscle imbalances. Symptoms can range from mild discomfort to severe pain that affects mobility, sitting, standing, and walking.

Common symptoms include:

  • Sharp or shooting pain in the lower back, buttocks, or leg
  • Numbness or tingling in the leg or foot
  • Weakness in the leg or foot
  • Pain that worsens when sitting, standing, or bending
  • Difficulty walking or performing daily activities

How Physical Therapy Helps

Physical therapy targets the underlying cause of sciatica while reducing pain and improving strength, flexibility, and posture. After a comprehensive evaluation, your licensed therapist creates a personalized plan tailored to your specific symptoms and goals.

Treatment may include:

  • Stretching and flexibility exercises
  • Core and lower back strengthening
  • Postural correction and body mechanics training
  • Nerve mobilization techniques
  • Pain management strategies
  • Functional training for daily activities

When Should You Start Physical Therapy?

You may benefit from physical therapy for sciatica if you:

  • Experience persistent or radiating leg pain
  • Notice numbness, tingling, or weakness in your leg
  • Have difficulty sitting, standing, or walking comfortably
  • Want to prevent chronic pain or recurring flare-ups

Early intervention can speed recovery and help prevent long-term issues.
