Shoulder Pain

Shoulder pain can limit your ability to lift, reach, or perform everyday activities, affecting your work, hobbies, and quality of life. Physical therapy provides targeted treatment to reduce pain, restore mobility, and strengthen the shoulder for lasting function.

What is Shoulder Pain?

Shoulder pain can result from injury, overuse, post-surgical recovery, or underlying conditions such as arthritis or rotator cuff issues. Without proper care, shoulder pain can become chronic and affect your overall movement and posture.

Common causes and symptoms include:

  • Rotator cuff injuries or tears
  • Tendinitis or bursitis
  • Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis)
  • Shoulder instability or dislocations
  • Pain, stiffness, or reduced range of motion
  • Weakness when lifting or reaching

How Physical Therapy Helps

Physical therapy focuses on addressing the underlying cause of shoulder pain while restoring strength, flexibility, and movement. After a thorough evaluation, your licensed therapist creates a customized plan tailored to your specific needs.

Treatment may include:

  • Range-of-motion and stretching exercises
  • Strengthening for shoulder and surrounding muscles
  • Posture and movement retraining
  • Pain reduction techniques, including manual therapy
  • Functional exercises for daily activities
  • Education on activity modification and injury prevention

When Should You Start Physical Therapy?

You may benefit from physical therapy if you:

  • Experience persistent shoulder pain or stiffness
  • Have difficulty lifting, reaching, or performing daily activities
  • Are recovering from shoulder surgery or injury
  • Want to prevent recurring pain or further injury

Early intervention can improve outcomes and prevent chronic limitations.
